* The 1834 concession from the Congregation of Rites was decreed for
the Diocese of Sutri-Nepi; the 1837 concession was for the Diocese
of Nola. Later scientific and
historical studies validated doubts regarding
both the historicity of her person and the authenticity of her
relics. These
ultimately led the Congregation of Rites, in accordance with
can. 1284 (CIC 1917), to order in the Instruction De calendariis
particularibus (14 February 1961) that “the feast of Saint
Philomena, virgin and martyr (August 11) be deleted from all
calendars” (no. 33).
