~ Martyrs of Japan ~

(† 1590-1715)

[3]

[There are many conflicts regarding the precise names of the Japanese martyrs canonized and beatified in the 19th century. This can be attributed to the inaccessibility of Japanese records to researchers during the sakoku (鎖国), the kingdom’s isolationist policy from 1633 to 1853. The names indicated in the bulls of canonization and beatification were culled from the apostolic processes held in Macao or Manila in the 17th century. Apart from inaccuracies in the spelling of the Japanese names during the canonical processes, there were also erroneous attributions to the membership of several Japanese martyrs in religious orders or associations - errors that are only being recently corrected by researchers since the 1970s.

In the early 20th century, access to Japanese archival records and comparative studies with archival documents unaccessed during the canonical processes has made it possible to correct many of these errors and attributions. The Hagiography Circle has chosen to adapt the Romanized names of the Japanese martyrs in Juan Ruiz-de-Medina’s authoritative tome El Martirologio del Japón (Rome: Institutum Historicum S.I., 1999) .

Nonetheless, the names for the martyrs used by the Catholic Church in Japan remain those used in the canonization and beatification bulls. These names are included in this page. In these cases, katakana is used for the Christian name and kanji for the surname. In this page, their Romanization follows the Modified Hepburn System (Hebon-shiki).]
