Twenty-three Decrees Promulgated

VATICAN CITY - Today, 19 December 2011, Pope Benedict XVI received in a private audience Angelo Cardinal Amato, sdb, prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints. During the audience, the Holy Father authorized the Congregation to promulgate the following twenty-three decrees regarding:

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed JACQUES BERTHIEU, professed priest of the Society of Jesus; born on 28 November 1838 in Monlogis, Polminhac, Cantal  (France) and killed in odium fidei on 08 June 1896 in Ambiatibe, Antananarivo (Madagascar); beatified on 17 October 1965;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed MARÍA DEL CARMEN SALLÉS BARENGUERAS (in religion: CARMEN OF JESUS), founder of the Conceptionist Missionary Sisters of Education; born on 09 April 1848 in Vic, Barcelona (Spain) and died on 25 July 1911 in Madrid (Spain); beatified on 15 March 1998;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed BARBARA COPE (in religion: MARIANNE), professed religious of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis of Syracuse ; born on 23 January 1838 in Heppenheim, Bergstrasse (Germany) and died on 09 August 1918 in Molokai, Hawaii (United States); beatified on 14 May 2005 ;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed KATERI TEKAKWITHA, young layperson of the archdiocese of Montréal ; born ca. 1656 in Auriesville (a.k.a. Ossernenon), New York (United States) and died on 17 April 1680 in Kahnawake (a.k.a. Sault Saint-Louis or Caughnawaga), Québec (Canada); beatified on 22 June 1980;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed PEDRO CALUNGSOD, young layperson of the archdiocese of Cebu; born ca. 1654 in Ginatitlan, Cebu (Philippines) and killed in odium fidei on 02 April 1672 in Tumon (a.k.a. Tomhom) (Guam); beatified on 05 March 2000;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed ANNA SCHÄFFER, layperson of the diocese of Regensburg; born on 18 February 1882 in Mindelstetten, Eichstätt (Germany) and died there on 05 October 1925; beatified on 03 July 1998;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God LOUIS BRISSON, priest  and founder of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales and of the Oblate Sisters of Saint Francis de Sales; born on 23 June 1817 in Plancy, Aube (France) and died there on 02 February 1908;  declared venerable on 19 December 2009;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God LUIGI NOVARESE, priest of the diocese of Frascati; founder of the Apostolate of the Suffering and of the Pious Union of the Silent Workers of the Cross; born on 29 July 1914 in Casale Monferrato, Alessandria (Italy) and died on 20 July 1984 in Rocca Priora, Rome (Italy) declared venerable on 27 March 2010;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God gERTrUDE PROSPERI (in religion: MARIA LUISA), professed religious of the Order of Saint Benedict; born on 19 August 1799 in Fogliano di Cascia, Perugia (Italy) and died on 13 September 1847 in Trevi, Perugia (Italy) ; declared venerable on 01 July 2010;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God MARIE-LOUISE-ÉLISABETH DE LAMOIGNON de MOLÉ DE CHAMPLÂTREUX (in religion: MÈRE SAINT-LOUIS), founder of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Louis; born on 03 October 1763 in Paris (France) and died on 04 March 1825 in Vannes, Morbihan (France); declared venerable on 16 January 1986;

- a miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God MARÍA ANGÉLICA PÉREZ (in religion: MARÍA CRESCENCIA), professed religious of the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Garden; born on 17 August 1897 in San Martín, Buenos Aires (Argentina) and died on 20 May 1932 in Vallenar, Atacama (Argentina); declared venerable on 22 June 2004;

- the martyrdom of the Servant of God ANTONIO SOLÁ GARRIGA (in religion: ORENCIO LUIS) and 18 COMPANIONS, professed religious of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, along with ANTONIO MATEO SALAMERO, priest of the archdiocese of Madrid, and JOSÉ GORASTAZU LABAYEN, layperson of the archdiocese of Madrid, married, who were killed in odium fidei  in various places within the boundaries of the Archdiocese of Madrid (Spain) during the religious persecution in the Spanish Civil War in 1936;

- the martyrdom of the Servant of God FRANCISCO MARCO ALEMÁN (in religion: ALBERTO MARÍA) and 8 COMPANIONS, professed priest and clerics of the Order of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, and EUGENIO GARCÍA TRIBALDOS (in religion: AGUSTÍN MARÍA), and 15 COMPANIONS, professed religious of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, who were killed in odium fidei  in various places within the boundaries of the Archdiocese of Madrid (Spain) during the religious persecution in the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1937;

- the martyrdom of the Servants of God MARIANO ALCALÁ PÉREZ and 18 COMPANIONS, professed priests and religious of the Order of the Blessed Virgin of Mercy, who were killed in odium fidei  in various places within the boundaries of the Diocese of Lelida (Spain) during the religious persecution in the Spanish Civil War in 1936;

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God DONATO GIANNOTTI, priest of the diocese of Capua and founder of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Immaculate; born on 28 June 1828 in Casapulla, Caserta (Italy) and died on 26 February 1914 in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Caserta (Italy);

- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God HENRI GRIALOU (in religion: MARIE-EUGÈNE OF THE CHILD JESUS), professed priest of Order of Discalced Carmelites and founder of the Secular Institute Notre-Dame de Vie”; born on 02 December 1894 in Le Gua, Aveyron (France) and died on 27 March 1967 in Venasque, Vaucluse (France);

Consistory Announced

VATICAN CITY - An ordinary public consistory will take place on 21 February, at 12 noon, during which Pope Benedict XVI will announce the date for the canonization of Blesseds:

  • GUIDO MARIA CONFORTI, archbishop of Parma and founder of the Pious Society of Saint Francis Xavier for Foreign Missions (Xaverian Missionaries);

  • LUIGI GUANELLA, priest and founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Charity (Guanellians) and of the Institute of the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence; and,

  • BONIFACIA RODRÍGUEZ DE CASTRO, founder of the Congregation of the Missionary Daughters of Saint Joseph.

The ceremony will take place at the Consistory Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace.
