ONE EQUIPOLLENT CANONIZATION AND EIGHT DECREES Promulgated

VATICAN CITY - Today, 05 July 2019, Pope Francis received Cardinal Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, in a private audience. During the audience, the Supreme Pontiff approved the favorable votes cast by the Cardinal and Bishop members of the Congregation and extended to the Universal Church the liturgical worship in honor of

Blessed BARTOLOMEU FERNANDES [BARTOLOMEU DOS MÁRTIRES]

professed priest of the Order of Preachers, archbishop of Braga; born in Mártires, Santa Maria Maior, Lisbon (Portugal) on 3 May 1514, and died in Viana do Castelo, Minho (Portugal) on 16 July 1590; beatified on 4 November 2001,

thus inscribing him in the book of Saints (equipollent canonization).

At the same time, the Holy Father authorized the Congregation to promulgate decrees regarding:

  • JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, founder of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in England;

  • Giuditta Adelaide Agata Vannini (in religion: GIUSEPPINA), founder of the Daughters of San Camillus;

  • MARIAM THRESIA CHIRAMEL MANKIDIYAN, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family;

  • MARIA RITA LÓPES PONTES DE SOUZA BRITO (in religion: DULCE),  professed religious of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception; and,

  • MARGUERITE BAYS, layperson of the archdiocese of Lausanne-Geneva-Fribourg and member of the Secular Franciscan Order.

During the Consistory, the Pope decreed that these Blesseds be inscribed in the Book of Saints on Sunday 13 October 2019.

VATICAN CITY - Yesterday, 12 February 2019, Pope Francis received Cardinal Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, in a private audience. In the course of the audience, the Holy Father authorized the Congregation to promulgate decrees regarding:

-  a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, founder of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in England; born in London, England (United Kingdom) on 21 February 1801, and died in Edgbaston, Birmingham, West Midlands, England (United Kingdom) on 11 August 1890; beatified on 19 September 2010;

-  a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed MARIAM THRESIA CHIRAMEL MANKIDIYAN, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family; born in Puthenchira, Thrissur (India) on 26 April 1876, and died in Kuzhikkattussery, Thrissur (India) on 8 June 1926; beatified on 09 April 2000;

- the martyrdom of the Servant of God VICTOR EMILIO MOSCOSO CÁRDENAS, professed priest of the Society of Jesus; born in Cuenca, Azuay (Ecuador) on 21 April 1846 and killed in odium fidei in Riobamba, Chimborazo (Ecuador) on 4 May 1897;
