Note: Armenian family names are easily recognized by their “ian” and “yan” suffixes (meaning “son of”). There are few exceptions where the endings have been changed to prevent attention, especially in Turkey, where the qualifier “oğlu” (“son of” in Turkish) is preferred. The word order in the Turkish nomenclature, however, is backwards - thus, BALDJI oğlu OHANNES should be understood as “OHANNES son of BALDJI”.
