  1. In Antinoöpolis (Egypt), Saints Julian and Basilissa, martyrs. († 4th cent.)

  2. In Nantes (France), Saint Felix, a bishop, who gave an outstanding witness of apostolic zeal at the service of his fellow citizens. He built the cathedral church and evangelized the rural populations with intense ardor. († 582)

  3. * In Würzburg (Germany), Saint Macarius, abbot, who was the first superior of the monastery of Irish monks in this city. († 1153)

  4. In Barcelona (Spain), Saint Raymond of Peñafort [Ramon de Penyafort], whose memorial will be celebrated tomorrow. († 1275)

  5. *  In Famagusta (Cyprus), the passing of Saint Pierre Salignac de Thomas, professed priest of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and bishop of Constantinople. He served as legate of the Roman Pontiff in the East. († 1366)

  6. In Fiesole (Italy), Saint Andrea Corsini, professed priest of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and bishop, notable for his austere life and assiduous meditation of Sacred Scriptures. He rebuilt convents devastated by the plague, governed his Church wisely, assisted the poor, and reconciled enemies. († 1373)

  7. In Valencia (Spain), Saint Juan de Ribera, bishop, who also exercised the functions of a viceroy. Devoted to the Holy Eucharist and a great defender of Catholic truth, he instructed the people with solid doctrine. († 1611)

  8. In Rome (Italy), Saint Carlo Melchiori from Sezze, professed religious of the Order of Friars Minor. Obliged from childhood to seek support, he induced his companions to imitate Christ and the saints. Vested in the Franciscan habit he desired, he assiduously devoted himself to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. († 1670)

  9. * In Casalmedinho, near Viseu (Portugal), Blessed Rita Amada Lopes Almeida of Jesus, virgin. In difficult times of religious persecution and corruption of customs, and amid great difficulties and obstacles, she founded the Institute of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, dedicated to the gathering and education of poor and abandoned girls, and diligently promoted the inner dignity of women. († 1913)

  10. In Rome (Italy), Saint Rafaela María Porras Ayllón of the Sacred Heart, virgin. She founded the Congregation of Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Maligned as mentally disabled, she spent the rest of her holy life in suffering and penance. († 1925)

  11. In Montréal (Canada), Saint André (Alfred) Bessette, professed religious of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who built in this city a renowned sanctuary in honor of Saint Joseph. († 1937)

  12. *  In Montcada (Spain), Blessed José Mariano of the Angels (Mariano Alarcón Ruiz), professed priest of the Order of Discalced Carmelites and martyr, who was killed out of hatred for religion during the persecution against the Church in the Spanish Civil War. (†1937)
