The Memorial of Saint Anthony,
abbot. After the death of his parents, he
distributed all his goods to the poor, following the
precepts of the Gospel. He retired to the solitude
of the Thebaid in Egypt, where he began to lead an
ascetic life. He zealously worked to strengthen the
Church by supporting the confessors of the faith
during the persecution of Diocletian and helping
Saint Athanasius against the Arians. He had so many
disciples that he is called “the father of monks”.

commemoration of Saint Julian,
hermit, surnamed Sabas, meaning “the Old Man”.
Although he hated the tumult of the city, he
momentarily abandoned his beloved solitude for
Antioch to confound with all his heart the partisans
of the Arian heresy. († c. 377)

Marcellus, bishop. He became a defender of
the city and, for his fidelity to the Catholic
faith, was sent into exile by Gondebaud, the Arian
King of the Burgundians. († 510)

Sulpicius “the Pious”, bishop, who was
promoted from the royal court to the episcopate. For
him, nothing was more precious than to care for the
cause of the poor. (†647)

Gamelbert, priest. He gave all his goods to
Blessed Utto, whom he had once baptized, to build
the monastery of Metten. († c. 800)

Roseline, virgin. Prioress of the Carthusian
monastery of Celle-Roubaud, she was renowned for her
self-denial, fasting from food and sleep, and
austerity of life († c. 1329)

Jenaro Sánchez Delgadillo, diocesan priest
and martyr. During the religious persecution in
Mexico, he was brutally beaten, stabbed with
bayonets, and hanged from a tree, out of hatred for
the Church. († 1927)

* At the Hersbruck concentration camp, in Nürnberger
Land (Germany), Blessed Teresio
Olivelli, martyr. A law professor, he was
deported because of his opposition to fascism. He
was killed by a camp supervisor while trying to
protect one of his fellow inmates. († 1945)
