Near Syrian Antioch (now Antakya, Türkiye),
Saint Aphrahat,
anchorite. Born and educated among the Persians,
following in the footsteps of the Magi, he was
converted to the Lord in Bethlehem. On reaching
Edessa, he retired to a small house outside the
walls. Finally, in Antioch he defended the Catholic
faith from the Arians with his preaching and
writings. († c. 378)

Gildas the Wise, abbot. He wrote about the
destruction of Brittany, deploring the misfortunes
of its people and reproaching the wickedness of its
princes and clergy. It is said that he founded the
monastery of Rhuys and that he may have died on the
island of Houat. († 570)

Sulpicius Severus, bishop, senator of Gaul,
whose wisdom, pastoral care, and zeal in restoring
discipline were praised by Saint Gregory of Tours.

Villana delle Botti, mother of a family, who,
having abandoned the worldly life, joined the Lay
Fraternities of Saint Dominic. She was renowned for
her meditation on the passion of Christ, austere
conduct of life, and begging in the streets for the
poor. († 1361)

* In Piastowe (Poland), Blessed
Bronisław Markiewicz, professed priest of the
Salesian Society of Don Bosco. With boundless
devotion, he founded the Congregation of Saint
Michael the Archangel, to support his apostolate
with young people. († 1912)

Blessed Bolesława Maria Lament, virgin, who
amid political upheavals founded the Congregation of
the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family to promote
Christian unity, help the abandoned, and form girls
to Christian living. († 1946)
