that of Crete. To them were addressed letters of
wise recommendations for the instruction of pastors

Saint Theogenes, martyr,
in whose honor Saint Augustine gave a sermon. († c.

In Bethlehem (Israel), Saint
Paula, widow. Coming from a noble senatorial
family, she renounced the world and, after
distributing her wealth to the poor, she retired to
the birthplace of the Lord. together with the
blessed virgin Eustochium, her daughter. († 404)

Xenophon and Mary and their sons John and Arcadius.
After renouncing their senatorial dignity and
substantial possessions, they embraced the monastic
life in the Holy City with equal ardor. († 6th
cent.)

Alberic, abbot. One of the first monks of
Molesme, he came to the foundation of Neumünster.
Elected as abbot, he fervently dedicated and
committed himself to the formation of monks as a
true lover of the Rule and of his confreres. (†

Eysteinn [Øystein] Erlandssön, bishop. He
governed the Church entrusted to him as its first
bishop, seeking its growth and defending it before
princes. († 1188)

Marie de la Dive, widow and martyr, who was
guillotined during the French Revolution for her
fidelity to her Church. († 1794)

In Villa del Tránsito (Argentina),
Saint José Gabriel del Rosario
Brochero, diocesan priest. Pastor of a vast
impoverished area, his heart embraced the poorest
with an immense pastoral charity, forgetting himself
to become everything for everyone, to the point of
contracting leprosy from visits to the sick and
dying blind. († 1914)

* At the Dachau concentration camp, in Oberbayern
(Germany), Blessed Michał Kozal,
auxiliary bishop of Włocławek and martyr. For
defending the faith and freedom of the Church under
the nefarious Nazi regime with invincible endurance,
he was sent for three years in this concentration
camp until he crowned his life with martyrdom. (†
1943)

Gabriele Maria Allegra, professed priest of
the Order of Friars Minor, distinguished scholar and
preacher of Sacred Scripture, who composed the
Chinese version of the entire Bible. († 1976)
