The Memorial of Saint Francis
[François] de Sales, bishop of Geneva and
Doctor of the Church. A true shepherd of souls, he
brought many separated brethren back to the Catholic
communion and with his writings he taught Christians
true devotion to God. With Saint Jeanne de Chantal,
he founded the Order of the Visitation. In Lyons
(France), he humbly surrendered his soul to God on
28 December 1621. On this day, he was buried in
Annecy (France). († 1622)

In Syrian Antioch (now Antakya, Türkiye), the passion
of Saint Babylas,
bishop. During the persecution under Emperor Decius,
after he had often glorified God with his sufferings
and torments, he gloriously ended his life bound in
chains. In these he commanded his body should be
buried. It is said that there suffered with him
three young men – Urban,
Prilidian and Epolonus – whom he had
instructed in the faith of Christ. († 250)

Paola Gambara Costa, widow, who belonged to
the Secular Franciscan Order. She distinguished
herself for the patience in puttting up with
her violent husband until she achieved his
conversion, as well as for the exceptional charity
she showed towards the poor. († 1515)

Blessed martyrs William Ireland, professed
priest of the Society of Jesus,
and John Grove, his servant. During the reign
of Charles II, they were falsely accused of sedition
and suffered martyrdom at Tyburn for their faith in
Christ. († 1679)

Blessed Marie Poussepin, virgin, founder of
the Institute of the Dominican Sisters of Charity
and of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
to help pastors of souls in the formation of young
women and for the assistance of the poor and the
sick. († 1744)

* In Pratulin (Poland), Blessed
Wincenty Lewoniuk and twelve companions,[1]
martyrs. Because they did not give in to either the
threats or flattery of those who wanted to separate
them from the Catholic Church and refused to hand
over the keys to the parish, they were mortally
wounded and killed. († 1874)

Timoteo (Giuseppe) Giaccardo, professed
priest of the Pious Society of Saint Paul, who
formed many disciples to proclaim the Gospel through
the means of social communication. († 1948)
