  1. In Alexandria (Egypt), the commemoration of Saint Apollonia, virgin and martyr, who after many cruel tortures at the hands of her persecutors, refused to utter sacrilegious words and preferred to be burned at the stake rather than renounce the faith. († c. 250)

  2. Also in Alexandria, the passion of many Holy martyrs killed by Arians through various means of torture while they celebrated the Eucharist in church. († 4th cent.)

  3. In Lemellefa (now Bordj Redir, Algeria), the commemoration of Saints Primus and Donatus, deacons and martyrs, also killed by heretics in church while trying to defend the altar. († c. 361)

  4. On a mountain near Apamea (now Qalaat al-Madiq, Syria), Saint Maron, hermit, totally dedicated to hard penance and contemplation, near whose tomb was erected a famous monastery, around which the Christian community that bears his name originated. († c. 423)

  5. * At the monastery of Llandaff (Wales), Saint Teilo, bishop and abbot, whose illustrious works are celebrated in many churches in Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. († 560)

  6. In Canosa di Puglia (Italy), Saint Sabinus, bishop, who was a friend of Saint Benedict and was sent to Constantinople as a legate of the Roman see to defend the true faith from the Monophysite heresy. († c. 566)

  7. In Hautmont (France), Saint Ansbert, who was abbot of Fontenelle and then bishop of Rouen, relegated to exile by King Pepin. († c. 695)

  8. * In Bavaria (Germany), the commemoration of Saint Alto, abbot. Irish by origin, he built in the forest of this region a monastery which then took his name. († 8th cent.)

  9. * In Nocera Umbra, Saint Rainaldo, bishop, formerly a Camaldolese monk of Fonte Avellana, who, while carrying out the episcopal office, firmly preserved the customs of the monastic life. († 1222)

  10. * In Vercelli (Italy), Blessed Giacomo Abbondo, diocesan priest, who, enamored with God, made himself fully available to his parishioners, particularly the poor, the sick, and prisoners. († 1788)

  11. * In Dülmen (Germany), Blessed Anna Katharina Emmerick, virgin, professed nun of the Order of Saint Augustine, who saw the bitter suffering of Our Lord Jesus Christ and experienced it in her own body. († 1824)

  12. In Premià de Mar, near Barcelona (Spain), Saint Miguel (Francisco Luis) Febres Cordero, professed religious of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, who promoted literary studies in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador for about forty years and then in Spain applied himself with simplicity of mind to full observance of the Rule. († 1910)

  13. * In Granada, Spain, Blessed Leopoldo (Francisco Tomás) Márquez Sánchez from Alpandeire, professed religious of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, who for over half a century served as questor of his community, begging for the convent and the missions, while distributing at the same time the alms of comfort and counsel, providing an example of austerity and purity of life. († 1956)
