In the mountainous region of Ranft, near Sachseln
(Switzerland), Saint Niklaus
von Flüe, called by heavenly
inspiration to a more perfect state of life,
separated from his wife and ten children and went to
live on a mountain as an anchorite. Famous for his
extreme penance and isolation from the world, he
emerged from solitude only once, when, faced with
the threat of civil war, he reconciled his
adversaries with a brief exhortation. († 1487)

Blessed Thomas Pilchard,
priest and martyr, a learned and affable man, who,
during the reign of Elizabeth I, was condemned to
the gallows in hatred of the priesthood. Also
commemorated with him is Blessed
William Pike, carpenter and martyr,
who in the same place and on an unknown day, by
order of the same queen, was most cruelly dissected
for having reconciled himself with the Roman Church.
