  4. The commemoration of many holy martyrs from Constantinople (now Istanbul, Türkiye), who, during the time of Emperor Constantius, by order of the Arian bishop Macedonius, were sent into exile and tortured with unheard-of torments. († 4th cent.)

On Mount Sinai (Egypt), Saint John, abbot, wrote for the instruction of monks the memorable treatise The Ladder of Divine Ascent, in which he presents the path of spiritual perfection in the form of a thirty-degree ladder in the ascent of the soul to God, which earned him the surname of “Climacus”.   10. * In Vercelli (Italy), Blessed Amadeo IX, Duke of Savoy, who during his government promoted peace by every means and favored with his wealth and ardent zeal the cause of the poor, widows and orphans. († 1472)

  11. In Boryeong (South Korea), the holy martyrs Antoine Daveluy, bishop, Pierre Aumaître, Martin-Luc Huin, priests, Joseph Chang Chu-gi and Luke Hwang Sŏk-tu,[1] catechists, who died by beheading for their faith in Christ. († 1866)

  12. * In Naples (Italy), Saint Ludovico from Casoria (Arcangelo Palmentieri), priest of the Order of Friars Minor, who, moved by ardor of charity towards the poor of Christ, founded two congregations: the Brothers of Charity and the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Elizabeth. († 1885)

  13. In Turin (Italy), Saint Leonardo Murialdo, priest, who founded the Society of Saint Joseph, so that abandoned children could feel the effects of Christian faith and charity. († 1900)

  14. In San Julián (Mexico), Saint Julio Álvarez Mendoza, priest and martyr, who, during the religious persecution, gave testimony of fidelity to Christ and his Church with the shedding of his blood. († 1927)

  15. * In Vienna (Austria), Blessed Maria Restituta (Helena Kafka), professed religious of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity and martyr, who, originally from Moravia, worked as a nurse and, arrested during the war by enemies of the faith, was beheaded. († 1943)

[1] The original elogium included Saint Thomas Son Cha-sŏn. However, he died separately from these martyrs and is celebrated on 18 May.
